| "Sealing Shadowcast"
is the story of how Sir Aeric got some small measure of revenge upon the
demon-dragon Shadowcast for the corruption and murder of Celfina, his twin
sister. It was something that occured completely 'off camera' and
was related to the Companions at large in the form of a letter addressed
to the Court:
To the Companions
of the Court of Light,
I apologize for my absence from Court these past few weeks, but I have
been on a quest of great import to Warwick. Although I am currently
ill and cannot attend Court this e'en, I felt that you all should hear
the story of my quest, in case something like this ever happens again.
I have been in Ahrothen these past few weeks, looking for a way to avenge
myself on the dragon Shadowcast for the murder of my beloved twin sister,
Celfina. All the normal entrances to Kel Redgaard de Koros were sealed
with powerful magic, so I had to search the land for a new, secret entrance.
Last
Friday, I found what I was looking for. It was a mining operation
in the mountains of Ahrothen, manned by Tiger Nomads and their human lieutenants.
The tunnel they had dug was the largest I had ever seen, big enough to
fit the Citadel within its mouth. My first thought was to return
to Court and tell you all what I had seen there, but I had a strange feeling
I should investigate the tunnel first. I waited until the miners
had left for the day and then crept into the tunnel.
The
enormous tunnel ran for miles, on a gentle slope into the earth.
As I walked, I thought to myself, "it must have taken them years to dig
this!" There was no evidence of any actual mining activity in the
shaft, so I wondered what the purpose of the tunnel was. Finally,
I reached what seemed to be the end of the tunnel. For the last twenty
feet or so, the tunnel sharply tapered so that is was no larger than the
Courtroom. What lie beyond those last twenty feet or so made by blood
run cold, for I was looking at the
underground lair of Shadowcast.
The
dragon itself was asleep on a huge pile of treasure, its breathing was
in measured doses, and if he noticed my presence, he made no sign of it.
I knew then what the Tiger Nomads were digging for. They were trying
to free their master from his underground prison!
I
knew I had no time to return to Court and warn anyone. By the look
of the tunnel, I was sure it would be completed before another day had
passed. My heart sank as I knew what needed to be done.
For one last time, I summoned the demon Pazuziel from his crystal prison
around my neck. I was going to command him to destroy the tunnel,
in exchange for my soul. After all, I had no chance to escape the
destruction, and the demon would accept nothing less. However, when
Pazuziel appeard this time, he bowed in supplication to me.
Lacking
the time to ponder this, I took his power into me once more. This
time, there was no struggle for control, and I felt stronger than ever.
Shadowcast awoke just in time to see me destroy a decade's worth of work
as well as his only chance to escape. Using the demon's power, I
collapsed the tunnel completely and teleported to the surface, unharmed.
While I may not have been able to slay the beast, I am satisfied that I
foiled one of his most major plans. In this small way, my sister
is avenged.
Loyalty and Light,
Sir
Aeric Bannier Caerna
